Is small dog house training really easier if you sit down a lot? I vote yes.

It’s natural for puppies to relieve themselves right where they are when the urge strikes. If crated, or otherwise contained, they instinctively prefer to go as far away from their food and water as possible. It’s us who wants them to learn a new “trick”. So isn’t it only fair that we do everything possible in the first couple of weeks to ensure their success?

There are lots of dog trainers and behaviorists offering their best dog house training methods for free. Unfortunately there’s also a lot of bad advice out there, especially online. In this article we’ll share what has worked best for us with our small dogs. We recommend you also teach your dog to potty on command because he can easily learn both concepts at the same time. Our Dog Potty Training on Command ebook is free during this pre-launch period, so hop on over there and reserve yours right now.

Whether you choose to get our Dog Potty Training on Command info or not, I hope this post provides you with some useful insight and perspective.

For the record, we made our share of mistakes while house training some of our first dogs just like most people do. However, one of the most important lessons we learned (the hard way!) was to keep puppies (as well as adult dogs who are new to our household) 100% supervised in the first few weeks. Dog house training requires you to be proactive and involved if you want good results fast.

Fortunately, I was able to work from home during the times we had small dog puppies to house train. It was a huge advantage, but not everyone has that kind of job freedom. So if you could arrange a four day weekend at home with your new puppy or adult dog right away, it will give him a huge head start on learning what you expect. Your actions during that first week will lay the ground work for your dog’s new life. The more quality time you have with your dog during those first few days, the better.

If you aren’t able to be at home much because of a job, just do the best you can do. But please commit ahead of time to give your new dog the gift of being by your side 100% of your evening time during his first week with you. It’s not really a lot to ask in the grand scheme of things. It’s just 7 evenings and 1 or 2 days out of 365 days a year.

Small dogs can be easier to house train because of their size. Since puppies sleep a lot, my way of keeping a new puppy 100% supervised is to hold them, or lay them beside me, while watching TV or a movie and carry them around with me when I need to move about. If I absolutely have to put them down to go somewhere or cook dinner, we make a quick trip outside for potty time and then they go directly into their little gated area for a while.

When a puppy wakes up from a nap while sitting with me, I immediately get up and take her directly outside for potty time. Our next stop is at her food and water dish. Then it’s playtime and I’ll get down on the floor and play with her or we’ll go outside to play on the grass. After a little play time, she’s ready for another drink or bite to eat (there’s always a little food and water dish wherever we are playing) and then she’ll start sniffing around for a place to potty again. If we’re not already outside, I’ll scoop her up now and head for the grass. Soon she’ll fall asleep again, just like any baby, and we’ll go watch another movie while she sleeps. There’s nothing like a quiet, lazy weekend with a sweet new puppy.

So, basically, just get completely tuned into your puppy’s schedule and body language. When he wakes up, he needs to go potty just like we do. If you’re holding your puppy during his nap, then you’ll be there when he wakes up so you can take him outside right away. It’s a great bonding time, too.

I’ve found that the more times I’m involved with taking a puppy outside to relieve himself during the house training process, rather than just letting him go potty in his little gated area, the faster he catches on to the idea of going outside to do his business.
