Hey there, Superhero dog owner. I’m so glad you stopped by! Let’s talk about obedience training for small dogs. This is a great time to get address some questions I’ve been asked about obedience training for dogs.

Q: Why bother with obedience training?:

Your dog will love you no matter what. That’s right. If you DON’T train your dog to be obedient, he’ll love you anyway. But if you DO teach him to be obedient, he’ll love you even more!

Why? Because obedient dogs get to go more places and meet more people. Plus, people LOVE obedient dogs.

Lots of Attention = a very Happy Dog!

What else do you get? Respect. And lots of it!

By putting in the energy and time it takes to train your dog right from the start of your new life together, you’ll be earning his eternal respect while also gifting him with peace of mind.

Why peace of mind? All dogs are born with an inherent need for leadership in their pack (family). Obedience training teaches your dog what you expect and also gives your dog the opportunity to take pride in themselves and to gain confidence as a valued member of your household. Something all dogs deserve.

Q: Which dog training system is better?
The basics of obedience training for dogs is generally the same for tiny, teacup size dogs on up to the magnificent gargantuan size dogs. It’s easy to spot the common denominators as you investigate the many professional dog trainers and dog training systems available on the market today.

Still, professional trainers can disagree on the methodology of obedience training. I suggest you follow your instincts and your heart. Whichever training method you choose should be based on mutual respect between you and your dog as well as consistency to avoid confusing your dog.

Q: Who should train my dog?
Personally, we chose to have a trainer come to our house once a week and train us to train our first dog. Our labrador puppy was only 8 weeks old at the time, so the lessons were very, very short to start with. The trainer was extremely patient about taking time to make sure we completely understood the lesson so we could teach our pup. Over the next 6 days, our puppy would have his lesson time 2-3 times a day. Always short, always fun.

There were lots of excellent books about obedience training for dogs, but we needed to see how it was done with our own eyes. Reading wasn’t enough for us. When we got our next dog, we again had a trainer come over once a week to train our two children how to train the new dog.

Nowadays I recommend dog training videos. Video never gets tired of showing you the lesson. There were times when we’d forget something about that weeks lesson halfway through the week and had to make a quick call to the trainer. With a dog training video, we could have just watched it again, no matter what time of the day or night. Sweet! Obedience training videos are the next best thing to one-on-one training sessions.

Q: Which video or DVD training series should I buy?
You may be familiar with dog whisperer Cesar Millan, renowned dog behavior expert. Cesar Millan rocks! I enjoy watching his TV show and reading his magazine. If money is no object for you, why not treat yourself and your dog to the complete 6-volume set of Cesar’s Mastering Leadership Series?

Another excellent choice is Dove Cresswell’s Online Puppy and Dog Training Series. Dove is a highly respected professional dog trainer in Hollywood California. Her series is less expensive, but just as effective. In fact, all things considered, I’d say it’s the more prudent investment.

Thanks for being here! I hope you’ll take time to share your dog training experiences with us sometime. Also, I’d love it if you’d let us know which system you ended up going with. Maybe it’s one we’ve never even heard of (there are sooo many out there), but it went great for you and your dog. Maybe you’d like to show them your appreciation by giving them a public kudos right here.

’til next time!
