Dog Training at Dog Parks – Why Not?
Dog parks can be good for more than just exercise and relief. What about small dog training? A trip to the dog park can be a great way to teach your small dog, or any sized dog for that matter, socialization and proper interaction with other dogs and people. With a little smart pre-planning, training in a dog park can be an interesting and pleasant diversion for you and your dog. We’re not talking about beginning a sit/stay lesson at the park, but it could be a good place to practice sit/stay skills after some initial play time. After all, it is a park, so have fun!
While we’re on the subject of dog parks, are you already aware of the immense need for more of them? There are approximately 77.5 millions dogs in the U.S. (according to the Humane Society). From our research, there are only about 1,100 registered dog parks.
77,500,000 dogs
÷ 1,100 dog parks
= Overcrowding
Obviously there’s no easy answer to solving this problem, unless it’s just one baby step at a time. Perhaps it’s time for more of us to jump on the bandwagon and lend our support to the local dog parks we like best. Some dog parks encourage volunteers to help with maintenance and all dog parks welcome financial assistance. Volunteering to help with fundraising would be another great way to lend our support.
What are your thoughts on dog training in dog parks?
