Dogs in the News Archives

I realize this topic isn’t related to small dog training, however I feel it’s an extremely important topic that affects all dog and cat owners. So I hope you’ll consider tossing your hat in the ring some small way in an effort to help control this growing problem.

“Three New Dog Breeds Recognized by AKC”. My first thoughts after reading this and other slightly misleading title variations on the major media news sites was “Where did these new breeds come from?”. The truth is these dogs have been around longer than the AKC. A more accurate title would have been Read the rest of this entry

Hero Dog Honored with Valor of Year Award

Every day has a bright spot and today mine was in my inbox. A friend sent this LINK and it made a big impression on me. Yogi did what we all hope our dogs would do in an emergency. Paul and Shearon Horton are fortunate to have such a relationship with Yogi and to have neighbors like Maggie and Bruce Tate.

Parks Park Project - Dog Poop Fueling Street Lamp

Dog poop is a hot topic right now for New York City’s Council member Jimmy Vacca. His solution is to raise fines for dog owners who don’t pick up their dog’s poop on command AND to hire more doggie poop police.

I suggest he get more creative. In fact, if he gave it some serious thought, he might even figure out a way to get some good political press for a change – the change he’s advocating for, that is.

France claims to be training dogs where to poop. Initial tests for getting 34 female beagles to poop where directed were 100% successful according to French microbiologist Hicham Ferhout . Perhaps Mr. Vacca’s constituents would like to be part of a neighborhood pilot program aimed at teaching dogs where to poop. There could be several sidewalk squares converted to designated dog poop target areas (with grass?) and professional dog poop scoopers could be hired to clean the target areas up as necessary – instead of hiring more dog poop police.

Hire dog poop artist Jay Shells to create some visual peer pressure in the neighborhood. I don’t know if Jay’s paintings have made a difference yet in his own neighborhood, but you gotta admit it’s a clever idea for training dog owners in the fine art of picking up their dog’s poop.

Crufts - 1990 Best in Show

Check out this good little read about the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden by Funny Business with Jane Wells

I had to laugh out loud at the way she described the standard outfit for a female handler. I’ve often wondered how it is that all the female handlers in those shows have such funny looking wardrobes. Now I understand!! LOL

Stop Dogfighting

Written by Tom F.

Have you been reading the news about dogfighting? It seems as though everyday I read something more disgusting than yesterday.

Today has been different. I read something uplifting today about a young lady raising money to stop dogfighting.

Philadelphia student Morgan McCafferty doesn’t do anything halfway. A high school senior at the top of her class, Morgan received a school assignment to do a service learning project that would bring about some form of social change. Seizing the chance to make a meaningful impact in her community, she decided to organize a 5K race as a fundraiser for The HSUS’s End Dogfighting in Philadelphia campaign. ~ Humane Society Race to End Dogfighting

Morgan McCafferty is a role model and hero. The Humane Society of the United States web site posted the story today and I commend them both.

Not to take away from the positive, but I wanted to mention the boneheaded sports jock Read the rest of this entry

Dogs in the News:

A delightful work of art! This is only one of numerous creative ways to honor your canine family members. Some become family heirlooms, handed down to children and grandchildren. How do you plan to honor your dog’s life?

There’s more to small dog training than sit, stay, fetch and puppy potty training.

White House florist Laura Dowling organized about 80 volunteers and together they spent between 500-600 hours twisting pipe cleaners to create this 4 foot tall decorative likeness of Bo, the White House dog.

Bo is a Portuguese water dog and is from the same litter as one of the dogs owned by the late Senator Ted Kennedy and his wife, Vicki.

Are you artistically inclined? Have you created a lovely work of art depicting your dog that you’d be willing to share?

Small Dog Training Advice:

If your dog has a microchip make the time this week to verify that all your information with the chip company is up to date.

The most common expectation we all share when going to the expense of having a microchip implanted in our dog is that it will increase the chances of having our dog returned to us if it gets lost or stolen. In fact, we have come to depend greatly on that possibility. But what about when the person who has your dog refuses to return it? Are you prepared to go to court to get your dog back?
